Economics student honored for ethical leadership

Economics major is becoming the top-paying college major according to the Wall Street Journal.

Grows make $2 million gift for economics undergraduate education

 

Our former PhD student, Roland Fryer, just won a MacArthur Fellowship (former genius award). Roland earned his PhD in Economics in 2002 from Penn State.

 

Welcome New Faculty

Vaidyanathan (Venky) Venkateswaran, Assistant Professor of Economics, earned his Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research interests are in the fields of macroeconomics and economic theory, particularly related to the role of information. His recent work focuses on the role of heterogeneous information in generating business cycle fluctuations. His most recent manuscript is titled "Heterogeneous Information and Labor Market Fluctuations".

Congratulations to Vijay Krishna, who has been awarded the Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Faculty Scholar Medals are given each year to recognize scholarly or creative excellence in one of five areas: arts and humanities, engineering, health and life sciences, physical sciences, or social and behavioral sciences. The work for which the medal is received must have been completed during the preceding five years.

Congratulations to Dirk Mateer, who has been awarded the George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching, named for the seventh president of the University (1882-1907). This award is presented each year to four faculty members across the University who have devoted substantial effort to and developed a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Roland Fryer, PhD, Penn State 2002, was just named to the list of 40 most influential/important Americans under the age of 40. Roland Fryer is number 38. Adam Slawski, Assistant Professor of Economics, earned his Ph.D. from The University of Minnesota. His research interests are in the areas of economic theory, particularly the economics of uncertainty and information, learning, financial economics, and asset pricing theory.
His most recent manuscript is entitled "The Dynamics of Speculative Bubbles under Learning."

Paul Grieco, Assistant Professor of Economics, earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in June 2010.  His research interests lie in the areas of applied microeconomics, industrial organization, and econometrics.  Paul's most recent manuscript is entitled "Discrete Games with Flexible Information Structures: An Application to Local Grocery Markets."

Saroj Bhattarai, Assistant Professor of Economics, earned his Ph.D. at Princeton University. His research interests are in international macroeconomics and finance, monetary economics and policy, and empirical methods in macroeconomics. His most recent manuscript is entitled “Optimal Currency Denomination of Trade: Theory and Quantitative Exploration.”

Congratulations to:

Dirk Mateer who was voted the Best Overall Teacher for Spring 2010 in Smeal College of Business by their student-run magazine, Critique.  He was recognized for his ability to simultaneously entertain and effectively educate classes of over 700 students.

Gay Catherman for receiving the 2010 Outstanding Office Professional Award sponsored by the Penn State Educational Office Professionals

Vijay Krishna for receiving the Liberal Arts’ Distinction in the Social Sciences Award which will be presented to him at the Spring 2010 Liberal Arts’ Alumni Society Reception on March 25, 2010.
